A large number of places in the U.S were named after places in England as a result of English settlers and explorers. These are mainly concentrated in the 13 eastern states which used to be the Thirteen Colonies in the British Empire, especially in the six known collectively as New England. Some names were carried over directly and are found throughout the country (such as Manchester, Birmingham and Rochester).
